You know how to get a story covered. The Canadian Covid Society is looking for a volunteer Media Relations Coordinator with professional media outreach experience to earn coverage for public health, a couple of hours a week, fully remote.
About the Canadian Covid Society
We are a national non-profit founded by physicians, scientists, engineers, and advocates. Our mission is to inform the public about the health consequences of Covid infections, to advocate for science-based measures to reduce transmission, and to empower and support people with Long Covid. Our current campaigns include Clean Air in Schools, Safer Health Care, and Long Covid awareness and resources.
What you’ll do
- Build and maintain media lists: health reporters, science journalists, columnists, and producers across Canada
- Pitch stories and secure earned media for our campaigns; follow up like a pro
- Place op-eds and expert commentary from our physician and scientist spokespeople
- Run media monitoring and coverage tracking, with a short monthly coverage snapshot
- Handle rapid response: connect journalists with the right spokesperson on deadline
What we’re looking for
- Professional media relations experience: publicist, PR agency, newsroom, or in-house
- Real pitching skill: you know what makes a story, and you write pitches journalists open
- News judgment and deadline discipline
- Relationships with Canadian journalists are a big plus
Nice to have: Muck Rack, Cision, or Meltwater experience; op-ed placement track record; familiarity with French-language media; health/science beat knowledge.
No certificates or credentials needed; hands-on experience is what counts here. You’d own media outreach with the same care you’d give a paying client.
Time commitment
- About 2 hours a week, on your own schedule, asynchronous-first
- One short planning meeting a month at most, approximately one hour, always remote
- 100% remote, anywhere in Canada
What you get
- A real media operation: professional project management software, shared media lists, and organized campaign briefs
- National earned-media placements for your portfolio
- Credible, quotable spokespeople (ER physicians, scientists, and engineers) that journalists want to talk to
- A reference that reflects professional work
- A role designed to be flexible and accessible, including for people living with Long Covid or who are medically vulnerable
