The Nuvaxovid vaccine — more commonly known as Novavax — will be made available in Canada for the 2026-2027 season, Sanofi announced this week in a press release.
Nuvaxovid is the non-mRNA protein-based Covid-19 vaccine. Sanofi has become the market authorization holder of Nuvaxovid in Canada, meaning it will oversee production, distribution, and safety monitoring.
Organizations including the Canadian Covid Society have been advocating for the return of Nuvaxovid (Novavax) to Canada, so people have access to a variety of Covid vaccine options, and so individuals who have adverse reactions to the mRNA vaccines once again have a safe vaccine option in Canada.
In the press release, Delphine Lansac, General Manager, Canada, Vaccines at Sanofi, noted the importance of this news: “Canadians have clearly expressed a need for a non-mRNA option when it comes to COVID-19 protection. With this transfer, Sanofi can now respond to that need.”
Nuvaxovid availability will be particularly beneficial for some individuals with Long Covid, who have experienced symptom flares with the mRNA vaccines.
While Sanofi’s announcement is a positive step forward, it will ultimately be up to provinces and territories to order Nuvaxovid and make it available through their vaccination programs. While Sanofi is in discussion with the provinces and territories, public support could make a difference with decision-makers.
